Cape Verde

A Cape Verde fishing charter is, above all, about blue marlin, and few places on earth put anglers on so many aggressive fish so close to port. This volcanic archipelago off the West African coast sits in warm Atlantic water where deep contours press near shore, so boats out of Mindelo and Sal often raise blue marlin within a short run of the harbor. The fishing here is famous for its energy: hungry, competitive fish, frequent multiple hook-ups and a real chance at big numbers during the April-to-June peak. Wahoo, tuna and dorado round out the mix, but the archipelago's reputation is built squarely on billfish, and most visiting crews plan their entire trip around the spring bite.

Cape Verde is a season-driven destination, and that season is spring into early summer. Blue marlin peak from April through June, when large numbers of fish move onto the grounds off Sao Vicente and Sal, and May is frequently the standout month for sheer bite count. Early April can produce some of the biggest individual fish of the year, while May and June deliver the highest odds of a multiple-marlin day. Outside this window the marlin thin out, though wahoo, tuna and dorado remain catchable. If a blue marlin is the goal, and for most visitors it is, build the trip squarely around the April-to-June peak and book accordingly, ideally with a few days' flexibility to work around wind.

The signature fish is the Atlantic blue marlin, and Cape Verde's calling card is the number of them it produces in spring, with the occasional true giant among the pack. Backing it up are hard-running wahoo, among the fastest fish in the ocean and superb eating, and yellowfin tuna that show over the offshore grounds. Sailfish and mahi-mahi appear in the mix as well, adding variety on slower marlin days. The fishery leans heavily toward trolling large baits and lures for billfish, so crews come rigged for heavy tackle and quick, safe releases.

Two islands anchor the fishery. Mindelo Marina on Sao Vicente is the traditional heart of Cape Verde sportfishing, a well-run harbor with an experienced international fleet and very short runs to productive marlin water. The port of Palmeira on Sal is the other main base and is convenient for visitors staying in Sal's resort areas. Most anglers fly into Cesaria Evora Airport on Sao Vicente (VXE) for Mindelo, or Amilcar Cabral International on Sal (SID), which has more direct European connections. Inter-island flights link the two easily. Transfers from either airport to the respective marina are short, and operators can help coordinate them.

Because the marlin sit close to port, Cape Verde is relatively fuel-efficient for a billfish destination, which helps keep costs reasonable. A full offshore day on a well-equipped sportfisher out of Mindelo or Sal runs roughly $1,200-$2,000, with the boat typically carrying up to four to six anglers. Shorter trips and smaller boats start around $900. Confirm the number of anglers and hours, since sharing a boat lowers the per-person cost. Book inside the April-to-June window and reserve early, because the best boats fill fast for the peak marlin weeks and many are internationally known operators. Choose your island by convenience: Sao Vicente and Mindelo for the deepest sportfishing tradition, Sal for easier flight connections and resort proximity.
